'Mass shooting simulator': Florida amusement park criticized for new game

An amusement park complex in Orlando, Florida has been heavily criticized on social media after it announced a new game on one of the attractions, namely target shooting. The edition told in more detail Everything Lubbock.

ICON Park has announced that it will be adding a game called Bullseye Blast to Wheel ride the park's 400-foot-tall (122 m) Ferris wheel. The game is described as a passenger competition to use laser blasters to hit targets located around Orlando that can be seen from the ride.

“As their capsule rises above Orlando, players scan the rooftops of ICON Park to find 50 pre-selected strategic targets of varying difficulty,” the park said in a press release. “In order to get the highest possible score, players need to hit as many objects as possible with their laser blaster in an 18-minute drive.”

According to a release posted on the ICON Park website, each player will be provided with a blaster with a telescopic sight and an infrared beam that "assists aiming at the target."

The Bullseye Blast game costs $5,95 in addition to the Ferris wheel ticket price. Representatives of ICON Park said that the attraction is "the only Ferris wheel in the world that provides this amazing new technology, as well as effectively gamifies and revitalizes the experience for the gamer audience."

The Bullseye Blast announcement was not posted on ICON Park's official social media pages, but was posted by Laughing Place, a theme park news blog.

When the article appeared on Twitter, users were immediately outraged by the new game in the park, with some calling it "insensitive" as well as a "mass shooting simulator."

“Everything about this is terrible: the concept, execution and timing,” wrote one of the followers. “Who approved this?!”

“This is definitely not it,” another user remarked.

Some, however, argued that the backlash was "a bit over the top".

“I struggle to understand why the laser shooter is insensitive. Ban laser tag, airsoft and paintball because they also look like weapons?” asked another commentator.

Some users have asked "how much more bad publicity is needed" for the park, referring to the death of a teenager at the complex earlier this year.

Tyre Sampson, 14-year-old boy from Missouri, crashed to death on the 430-foot (130 m) Free Fall Ride at ICON Park in March. An autopsy later showed that he had fallen over 70 feet (21 m), resulting in internal injuries as well as head, neck, and torso injuries.

The free fall attraction was closed after the teenager's death, and Sampson's family called for it to be closed permanently. The parents of the deceased boy filed a lawsuit against the owner of the attraction, the manufacturer and the lessor, claiming liability for product quality.
