Heavy snow and blizzards: winter storm hits US East Coast

A slow winter storm that hit the West Coast last weeksupposed to strengthen over the Rocky Mountains and Central Plains of Colorado before moving east.
The storm caused more than 7 feet (2,1 m) of snow to fall in the Sierra Nevada region of California. This created dangerous weather conditions, which blocked the roads.
As snow builds up over the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley on Saturday, January 30, the storm's area will expand to the Ohio Valley and Upper Great Lakes, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

By Sunday morning, January 31, the storm will move to parts of the Mid Atlantic, and freezing rains will hit Virginia and North Carolina.
The storm over the Midwest is expected to subside on Sunday and rain in the southeast by Monday morning, February 1.

However, the Midwestern states have already experienced record amounts of snow this season, and high wind warnings have been issued in many East Coast states.
The heavy snowfall will continue amid persistently cold temperatures ahead of a short period of warming next weekend (Feb. 6-7), Fox News meteorologist Rich Reichmuth said.

He said that 6 to 10 inches (15-25 cm) of snow is likely to fall in the New York State area, but the amount could be higher if the storm intensifies or changes.
In New York City, wind gusts can occur at speeds of up to 50 miles (80 km) per hour. In the New England area, meteorologists predict the storm will likely continue until Wednesday, February 3.
