Schoolchildren in the United States will be given special food stamps annually: who and how can get them
The House of Representatives voted 225 to 201 on Friday, December 23, in favor of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, which includes $40 million to create a permanent EBT (P-EBT) program during the pandemic for schoolchildren. Writes about it Yahoo!.
P-EBT (Food Stamp Benefits), available during the summer when school is closed, provides children with the following rights:
- Temporary emergency food allowances on EBT cards used to buy food, up to $40 per child per month;
- summer takeaway or delivery options in the countryside;
- up to 10 days of food that you can take home instead of eating all of it at food outlets.

Who is eligible to participate in the program:
- children who would receive free or reduced price meals under the National School Meals Act if their schools were not closed or operated with reduced hours or attendance for at least 5 consecutive days;
- young children in Supplemental Food Assistance Program (SNAP) families whose child care facility is closed or operating with reduced hours or attendance, or who live in the area of schools that are closed or operating with reduced hours;
- students who were eligible for free or reduced price meals during the current school year, and students who recently became eligible for reduced-price meals during the summer months;
- all children under the age of 6 enrolled in SNAP.
The news that summer EBT benefits will become permanent during the pandemic should be a huge relief to millions of families. The program has proven to be very effective in combating food insecurity.
Food insecurity dropped sharply after relief measures were put in place in late 2020 and early 2021, but have been on the rise since the summer of 2021, a Census Bureau study found. Among families with children, nearly 12 million adults said in early May 2022 that they did not have enough food in the previous week, an increase of 4,1 million since early August 2021.
