A schoolgirl from Kazakhstan has developed a unique spacecraft: she was invited for an internship at NASA

Yaroslava Kravchuk, a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Kazakhstan, was invited for an internship at NASA. The girl created a model of the small Kanysh spacecraft for the production of hydrogen fuel from the soil of comets and asteroids. The edition told in more detail Tengrinews.

The girl presented the project of the aircraft at the international scientific conference "XXII Satpayev readings" in Pavlodar (Kazakhstan). It took her about six months to develop, manufacture and assemble the finished layout.

As the girl's mother Irina Kravchuk said, the idea to extract hydrogen from the water of extraterrestrial sources came to her daughter last summer while participating in the Olympics. And in the fall, the girl began to take online lessons from the Almaty rocket science coach Yevgeny Bovsunovsky.

“We worked together with the coach, made a 3D model, calculated everything. In January, all the details were ready and we started printing. This took about two months. Just at this time, the deadline for applying to the NASA school was approaching. And it turned out that the topic of the essay intersected with the topic of the device’s operation,” my mother shared the details.

The schoolgirl herself says that her project is of interest to specialists because of its uniqueness.

“Small spacecraft for various needs is a modern trend in the development of the industry. There have been no devices similar to Kanysh yet. The principle of its operation is that it docks with a comet, collects soil and ice from the surface, and receives clean water. Then, using electrolysis, it produces hydrogen and oxygen, which are then used as fuel, as well as for human needs,” explains Yaroslava.

The schoolgirl's project has already been evaluated at NASA, where the girl was given a grant to study at the United Space School in Houston (Texas).

The girl's mother said that her daughter has been fond of space since childhood.

“In any city where we visited with our family, we first went on an excursion to the planetarium or observatory. We were able to visit the planetariums of Moscow, Novosibirsk, Almaty, Greenwich and Kazan. And, of course, Yaroslava loves films and books about space and astronauts. At school, in the fifth grade, she chose physics and mathematics because she wants to connect her future profession with space. Her dream was to go on an internship at NASA and attend a rocket launch in Baikonur. My daughter will go on an internship this summer, but her second dream has not yet come true,” noted the schoolgirl’s mother.

In October 2021, Yaroslava participated in the national astronomical tournament for schoolchildren named after M. Abdildin “Man. Earth. Universe” as part of the Pavlodar region team and won the grand prix of the tournament.
