Coursera’s 2025 Microcredentials Report demonstrates how powerful including a course or certificate on a resume can be for job search results. According to the report’s findings, nearly 96% of U.S. employers believe that microcredentials add value to a candidate’s application. Ninety percent of employers are willing to offer higher starting salaries to microcredentials, with even higher premiums for credit-based or GenAI-based qualifications. In the past year, 90% of employers have hired at least one microcredential holder, according to the report.

Thus, having micro-qualifications on your resume can be a deciding factor for getting hired.

What certificates should be included in a resume?

The most important factor when choosing courses or certifications to study and include on your resume is their relevance. For example, you don’t need to list a life coaching certification if you’re applying for a software developer position, unless the company has a coaching culture or you’re aiming for a leadership position and want to demonstrate your coaching and leadership abilities. In that case, it would be relevant.

Find out what skills are most in demand in your industry, at your desired employer, and for a specific job, and look for online courses and certifications that provide the relevant qualifications.

Another way to determine which courses to include is to look at reports like the one mentioned above from Coursera or the World Economic Forum's latest report on the future of jobs and skills for 2025 and beyond.
