Shakira faces 8 years in prison and a $24 million fine for tax evasion

Global pop star Shakira could face both a hefty prison sentence and a fine if found guilty of tax fraud. The edition told in more detail Fox News.

The Spanish prosecutor's office demands that Shakira be sentenced to 8 years and 2 months in prison, as well as to pay a fine of 24 million euros (a little over $24 million).

The star was offered a settlement agreement, but she refused it and chose to stand trial. The date of the meeting has not yet been set.

Representatives of Shakira said: “The singer has always cooperated with the authorities and observed the law, thereby demonstrating her impeccable behavior not only as an individual and a taxpayer. She faithfully followed the advice of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, a prestigious and internationally recognized tax firm. The tax inspectorate, which loses every second lawsuit with its taxpayers, continues to violate its rights and starts another baseless case. The singer is confident that her innocence will be proven at the end of the trial.”

Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabelle Mebarak Ripoll, is accused of failing to pay taxes to the Spanish government in the amount of 14,5 million euros ($15 million) between 2012 and 2014.

The prosecutor's office in Barcelona claims that the singer spent more than half of 2012 and 2014 in Spain, and therefore is obliged to pay taxes in this country.

The three-time Grammy winner and three-time Latin Grammy winner faces six charges.

In May, the star filed an appeal on the same charge of tax fraud, but the court denied her petition.
