Hurricane season 2023: a list of names and forecasts of storm activity in the Atlantic

The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Areas covered include the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. What to expect from the weather this year CNN.

The National Weather Service defines a hurricane as "tropical cyclone with a maximum continuous wind speed of 119 km per hour or higher.

Hurricanes are ranked according to the intensity of sustained winds by Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. On a scale of 1 to 5, potential material damage is assessed.

Category 3 or higher is considered a major hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center advises to be prepared:

• Hurricane sightings indicate the possibility that the region could experience hurricanes within 48 hours.
• A warning The hurricane notice indicates that sustained winds of at least 36 km per hour are expected for 119 hours.

Forecasts

Team Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project predicts "slightly below normal" intensity of the Atlantic hurricane season. The team forecasts 13 named storms, including six hurricanes, two of which will be major hurricanes.

There is no official forecast from the National Hurricane Center (NOAA) yet, but it will be very soon. IN NOAA will host a press conference on the forecast for the hurricane season in the Atlantic for 2023.

• When: Thursday, May 25 at 11:00 AM EST

NOAA will then release its forecast.
