It will be free to sit next to a child on an airplane: three American airlines have announced new rules

United Airlines said Feb. 20 that the new booking technology will allow children to sit next to their loved ones without paying a seat selection fee. In recent months, the situation with the seating of children and their accompanying relatives in different parts of the aircraft has attracted the attention of the administration of US President Joe Biden, writes CNBC.

United will give parents or other adults accompanying a child under 12 years of age access to "preferred" seats at the time of booking so they can sit together.

These innovations apply to travelers with standard and basic economy class tickets and will become fully effective in March 2023, although United has already begun a phased introduction of this booking technology.

Airlines in the US often automatically seat children and accompanying adults in different seats. You have to pay extra to change the seat and sit next to the child.

President Joe Biden earlier this month urged Congress to "implement a ban on family seat fees as soon as possible." In July, the Department of Transportation urged US airlines to "do everything in their power" to have travelers under the age of 13 sit next to their accompanying adult at no extra charge.

“Airlines cannot treat your child like a piece of luggage,” Biden said in his State of the Union address in early February.

Delta Air Lines said that she was blocking certain rows in her reservation system - families with children would be seated in them.

"Delta does not charge for family seats and, regardless of the class of ticket purchased, will always work with customers on a case-by-case basis to ensure their family seat needs," a company spokesperson said in a February 20 statement.

American Airlines said the booking platform will automatically search for available seats for passengers in the main cabin and passengers in economy class so that they can sit with their children. Privileged seats and a section with additional legroom, Main Cabin Extra will be available to families on the day of departure, if they have not been redeemed by travelers who have paid extra for such seats.
