Serbia Returns Nazi Property to Jews
In Serbia, the law came into force, according to which Jewish property expropriated by the Nazis and Belgrade authorities during World War II will be transferred to Jewish organizations.
According to a law passed by the Serbian parliament in February, the Federation of Jewish Municipalities of Serbia will return about three thousand buildings selected by the Nazis to the authorities.
The law also stipulates that the Federation of Jewish Municipalities of Serbia during 25 years, starting from 2017, will annually receive from the state 950 thousand euros (about 1,1 million dollars) to finance Holocaust studies, curricula, scholarships for students and other Jewish needs communities.
Before 1941, about 33 of thousands of Jews lived in Serbia, but by May 1942, the Nazis and the collaborationist government had been destroyed or exiled to concentration camps 80% of the Jewish population.
“After the war, the authorities decided to return the property, but since so many people were killed, there was no one to return it,” 93-year-old Belgrade resident Alexander Lebl, one of the few Serbian Jews to survive the Holocaust, told AFP.
In the 2002 year, according to the census, in Serbia there were less than 1200 Jews.
As noted, by adopting a new bill, Serbia became one of the first countries in Eastern Europe that decided to return expropriated property to the Jewish population.
