Senator from New Jersey has proposed to legalize marijuana in the US

US Senator from New Jersey County, Democrat Corey Booker proposed at the federal level to legalize marijuana.

“There are marijuana arrests all over the country, but these arrests are targeting low-income communities,” former Newark Mayor Booker said during a speech at Facebook Live.

Booker's bill provides for the legalization of marijuana at the federal level, which will help save money on the construction of prisons and will be able to make room in prisons for criminals who have committed more serious crimes.

If this bill is adopted, the item “possession of marijuana” will be excluded from the list of crimes, and people who are serving sentences for crimes related to marijuana will be able to petition for a review of their cases.

Booker noted that eight states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana and those states are “really seeing positives from this decision. Now I believe the federal government should remove marijuana from the list of illegal substances,” Booker said.

However, Booker’s bill, which received the title Marijuana Justice Act 2017, there is almost no chance to go to the Congress, which is controlled by the Republicans, besides in the administration of President Donold Trump is clearly against marijuana, writes Politico.

Note that the former governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie promised to veto any bill on the legalization of marijuana. The Republican Governor also heads the presidential opioid dependence commission.

At the same time, the advocates of the Booker Initiative argue that this bill must be adopted, as public opinion polls increasingly show the growing support of the majority of voters for the legalization of marijuana.
