Texas Senate Wants All Schools to Hang 10 Commandments and Allocate Time for Prayer

Texas lawmakers have proposed teaching Christian theology in schools and putting up a Ten Commandment display in every classroom. Read more about the initiative told the publication The Guardian.

A parallel bill approved April 20 by the Republican-controlled Texas Senate would require educational institutions to set aside time each day for students and staff to read the Bible and other similar literature.

Efforts to further erode the separation of church and state follow a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last summer that upheld a former Washington State high school football coach fired for praying with players after games.

The Conservative panel ruled by a 6/3 vote that the school district violated the constitutional rights of coach Joseph Kennedy. The school district paid Kennedy almost $2 million.

Phil King, Republican senator from Texas, mentioned the case at a committee hearing when he introduced the Ten Commandments bill.

"It will remind schoolchildren across Texas of the importance of America's fundamentals," he said.

On April 20, state senators introduced both bills to the state House of Representatives.

They are backed by Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who describes himself on his personal website as "Christian first, conservative second, and Republican third."

“I believe that you cannot change the culture of a country until you change the culture of humanity,” Patrick noted. “Bringing the Ten Commandments and prayer back into our schools will allow students to become better Texans.”

The drive to promote God's word in public schools is on the rise. In August last year, there was opposition to the distribution of "In God We Trust" banners after a state law went into effect requiring donated items bearing the phrase to be displayed on public campuses.

“These posters demonstrate the more casual ways in which the state can impose religion on society,” Sophie Ellman-Golan of Jews for Racial and Economic Justice said at the time. “They themselves are a fundamental violation of the separation of church and state.” But in a broader context, it’s hard not to see them as part of a larger Christian nationalist project.”

Opponents of the Ten Commandments bill appeared in the legislature earlier this month.

“I should have the choice whether to introduce my daughter to the concepts of adultery and marital desire,” said John Litzler, general counsel and director of public policy for the Texas Baptist Christian Commission. “This shouldn’t be among the main things she learns in kindergarten.”
