The US Senate is close to adopting a bill to finance the fight against Zika

Senior senators reported on Thursday that the main obstacle that does not allow to reach a compromise on the bill to allocate $ 1,1 billion to fight the Zika virus can be eliminated soon.

On Tuesday, a vote on the Republican bill was blocked by Democrats by a six-vote margin, 6 to 52.

The main snag, according to Democrats, is the issue of funding the American Planned Parenthood Foundation, which has recently been at the center of various scandals.

Republicans strongly oppose the allocation of funds to this fund.

“The challenge we're facing is getting money to address the Zika virus problem,” says No. 2 Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas. “I don’t see any obstacles to reaching a decision on Zika if we agree to postpone the discussion on abortion and Planned Parenthood funding.”

According to the Republicans, it is impossible to postpone a further resolution of the issue, since the funds that are planned to be allocated for creating a vaccine against Zika and controlling the process of spreading the virus may end up too late.

By the end of September, it is planned to consider a federal bill on financing the fight against Zika, which will probably be the last opportunity to reach a compromise.

According to some reports, the leader of the Senate Majority, Republican Mitch McConnell, admits that party representatives will give up their tough position regarding Planned Parenthood.

Earlier, Planned Parenthood stated that passing the bill in this form would not allow a number of organizations, including the ProFamilias medical institution in Puerto Rico, to receive funding, since this institution is a member of the Planned Parenthood international federation and does not participate in Medicaid.

In addition, Democrats oppose concessions on the issue of restrictions on the use of pesticide spraying to combat the Zika virus.
