Families of 9/11 victims banned Biden from attending memorial events

Family members of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks called on US President Joe Biden to stay away from memorial events unless he declassified the files of the attacks. The edition told in more detail with the BBC.

About 1800 people signed a letter urging the president to publish documents that they believe point to the involvement of Saudi Arabian officials in the conspiracy.

They say that if he refuses, he should not attend next month's ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack.

On that day, September 11, 2001, about 3000 people died.

Investigators said the attacks were carried out by the al-Qaeda terrorist group and provoked the US invasion of Afghanistan. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudi citizens.

“We cannot, in good faith and with respect for the dead, sick and wounded, welcome the President to this land until he fulfills his obligation,” the survivors’ family members said in a letter.

They are calling on President Biden to stay away from the three sites where the attacks took place - New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Families have long argued that Saudi officials knew about the attack in advance and did nothing to stop it. They are suing the Saudi Arabian government, which denies any involvement.

Several senior former Saudi officials were questioned in a sworn trial last month. The testimony remains closed, which further upsets the families.

“Since the conclusion of the 11/2004 Commission, much investigative evidence has been uncovered implicating Saudi government officials in supporting the attacks,” the families said in a statement. “For several administrations, the Department of Justice and the FBI have actively sought to keep this information secret and prevent the American people from learning the full truth about the 11/XNUMX attacks.”

The administrations of George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump also refused to declassify documents, citing national security concerns.

“Twenty years later, there is simply no reason to keep this information secret,” the group wrote. “But if President Biden abandons his commitment and sides with the Saudi Arabian government, we will be forced to publicly oppose any participation by his administration in any 11/XNUMX memorial ceremony.”
