Seven states sued trump administration

Texas and six other Republican-ruled states sued the administration of President Donald Trump in an effort to end the program to protect immigrants illegally brought to the United States in childhood, which was initiated by former Democratic President Barack Obama (DACA).

According to Voice of AmericaThe lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Texas, was another turn in the ongoing political and legal struggle around the Deferred Action Program for Children Arriving in the USA (DACA), which Republican President Trump was already trying to rescind.

In September, Trump announced that he would close the program and cancel the protection measures for immigrants, which are sometimes called “dreamers”.

The president gave Congress time before 6 in March to develop alternative measures of protection, but because of political differences between Trump and lawmakers from both parties, Congress did not take any decision.

In the meantime, court decisions have appeared requiring that the program still remain in force, however, new applications from migrants for participation in it will not be accepted.

The program protects about 700 thousands of young people, mainly Hispanic, from deportation and gives them the right to work for two years, after which they must submit new applications.

Texas, joined by Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina and West Virginia, claims in its lawsuit that the Obama administration has exceeded its authority by launching this program without a proper Congress decision.

“Our lawsuit concerns the principle of the rule of law, and not the rationality of any particular immigration policy,” said Texas Attorney General Republican Ken Paxton.

"Texas for several years stated that the federal executive does not have the authority to unilaterally endow foreigners with illegal status in the country with legal status and issue work permits to them," he added.

The head of the leading organization for the protection of the rights of the Hispanic population said that the lawsuit was filed too late and is against the law.

“Today’s lawsuit filed by seven state-hitting states appeared almost 6 years after the introduction of the DACA program and many weeks after three other federal courts began deciding that the DACA initiative should continue despite attempts by Donald Trump to stop it.” , - said Thomas Saenz, President of the Foundation for the Legal Protection and Education of Mexican-Americans (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund).

Plaintiffs ask the court to terminate the DACA program, which would mean termination of the issuance and renewal of work permits, but not cancellation of valid permits.
