Seven low-cost direct flights from America to Europe for an autumn vacation

For most European travel destinations, it's been one hell of a summer season - record crowds of travelers, high prices and incredible heat. But savvy vacationers have waited out the peak season in favor of cooler temperatures, fall foliage and lower prices. Now is the time to buy plane tickets to one of seven popular European destinations, and the publication Travel Off Path suggested the best time to visit.

1. Amsterdam, Netherlands

• Best time to visit: 20-30 November

A direct flight from Washington, D.C. to Amsterdam Schipol Airport is currently cheaper than usual, with a round-trip cost of just under $750 (the price drops to just over $400 if you're willing to add a layover to your trip).

You're unlikely to find a lower price than this, so a visit to one of Europe's most charming cultural centers is a bargain.

While the peak time for seeing fall foliage in Amsterdam is in early November, visiting the city later in the month means you can still enjoy the metropolis in all its fall splendor.

Explore the canals without the crowds and enjoy events like the Amsterdam Light Festival, the Van Gogh Museum, or the opportunity to warm up with hot chocolate.

2. Madrid, Spain

• Best time to visit: 5-15 November

Fly from JFK Airport to the Spanish capital Madrid for just $640 round trip.

Perhaps this is the lowest price for today. But it could go up by almost $300 if you wait until October to buy tickets.

These dates are perfect for travelers looking to experience the magic of autumn in Madrid.

At the beginning of November, the trees take on a beautiful golden color, making a stroll through the famous Retiro Park or a train ride across the country all the more charming.

The weather won't be too cold yet, so this is a great time to explore the rest of the city and visit places like the Gran Vía, Plaza de Cibeles, and Plaza Mayor.

If it gets too chilly outside, warm up surrounded by some of the most famous pieces of classical European art.

3. Lisbon, Portugal

• Best time to visit: almost all of November

Lisbon is experiencing a record summer of tourism. At the same time, the number of tourists in the Portuguese capital (due in part to the recent visit of the Pope) has led to overcrowding and rising prices.

However, the cost of air tickets from the USA to Lisbon will decrease from the last week of October until November.

Lower-than-usual prices are predicted for most of November, especially if you arrive and depart on a weekday.

Booking a round trip flight from JFK to Lisbon for a week in November currently costs just over $600, about $300 less than usual.

If you're interested in fall foliage, it's best to wait until the end of November or even December, as the leaves in Lisbon only change at the end of the season.

4. Rome, Italy

• Best time to visit: 26 November - 3 December

Skip Thanksgiving in the States this year and opt for a fall holiday in Italy instead.

Prices for direct round trip flights from New York to Rome are the lowest in the last week of November.

Air France, Delta or KLM flights are now available for as little as $685, which is a bargain for a flight of just over eight and a half hours.

Rome in November is perfect and charming, with daytime temperatures rising above 50 degrees (+10 Celsius) and popular spots like the Trevi Fountain, Rome's Colosseum and the Vatican with far fewer tourists.

5. Munich, Germany

• Best time to visit: 6-27 November

November is often touted as the best time to visit Munich, and current airfares from Washington DC to the German city are the lowest of the season.

A flight for a week in mid-November will currently cost you just $790, which is about $130 less than usual (and a whopping $586 less than the fare if you wait much longer to book).

Enjoy the cozy atmosphere as autumn turns into winter and the city prepares for Christmas markets, the Tollwood winter festival and other cultural celebrations.

Or take a day trip from Munich to visit the popular Neuschwanstein Castle.

6. Paris, France

• Best time to visit: almost all of November

Ella Fitzgerald might sing "I love Paris in the spring," but there's really nothing better than seeing the City of Lights in the fall.

If this has ever been on your bucket list, now is the time to book your seat there.

Currently, you can buy a round-trip ticket from JFK to Paris for just $473.

Climb up to the observation deck of the Arc de Triomphe and see the city glow in stunning reds and golds.

There are plenty of other places for autumn photos - Montmartre, the Tuileries Garden and the Quai Saint-Michel.

7. Dublin, Ireland

• Best time to visit: November days.

If you can fly out of Miami, you can now buy a ticket to Dublin and back for as little as $360.

There has never been such a low price in the last seven months.
