The seventh African American church burned down in Charleston
North of Charleston, South Carolina, the seventh black church was burned down completely. This time, the historic temple of the African Methodist Episcopal Church on Mount Zion, built more than 100 years ago, fell victim to the fire. Police are considering the option of arson. Firemen of two districts extinguished the fire around 4 hours.
The building dates back to the time of the African American congregation. The first time the church building on this site burned down in 1995 year - then two members of the Ku Klux Klan were accused of arson. A new church building was erected under President Clinton.
This time the police again suspect arson as the cause of the disaster. A version is being considered that the burned-out church was the seventh in a series of church burnings for African Americans after the white shooter Dylan Ruf in Charleston last month killed 9 people in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston. At least five black churches were set on fire within two weeks of this tragedy in the 90 area minutes from the temple on Mount Zion.
