A $ 22 restaurant bill: Ukraine arrested criminals who extorted money from foreigners

In Ukraine, the capital's police detained a group of extortionists who were trying to force a foreigner to pay 600 thousand hryvnias ($ 22,3 thousand) for a dinner at a restaurant. The publication told about this in more detail. News.PN.

During a special operation on August 1 in Kiev, the police detained 10 suspects of extorting money from foreigners. The intruders lured foreigners to certain restaurants, where they beat, tortured and, under the threat of weapons, confiscated documents, money, and jewelry.

They have been operating since 2020. The police are aware of 150 such robberies. Criminals hoped that the victims would not contact the police or leave the territory of Ukraine, and law enforcement officers would not learn about their crimes.

The organizer of the criminal group is a citizen of the Russian Federation, who is on the wanted list in his homeland for committing fraudulent actions in the banking sector.

The organizer attracted nine girls to his "scheme", who through instant messengers got acquainted with foreigners and invited them to restaurants belonging to the leader of the group. Foreigners placed an order, after which they were issued a check with significantly inflated prices, which they were unable to pay.

When a client demanded an explanation, he was locked in the backroom of the establishment. The attackers, under the threat of weapons and with the use of physical force, took away personal belongings, documents, jewelry. In addition, they forced the victims to transfer money to their accounts. If they did not have money, the defendants demanded that the victims' relatives send them big sums. Then they took their victims to a remote area of ​​the capital. The criminal gang consisted of 10 athletic people aged 18 to 41 years.

“The detained persons and the owner of the establishment directly participated in attacks on foreigners, each of whom was assigned a certain role in the developed scheme - from a waiter and administrator to a security guard, a taxi driver, and so on,” said Dmitry Sitar, First Deputy Head of the Pechersk District Prosecutor's Office.
