In the fall of 2017, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced a megaproject called Neom, which is designed to diversify the economy of the oil-dependent kingdom. As part of the project, it is planned to build three independent facilities on an area of ​​more than 26 square kilometers in the north-west of the country. When the crown prince commissioned the development of these lands, he demanded something as ambitious as the Egyptian pyramids, writes The Wall Street Journal. In 2021, Prince Mohammed bin Salman unveiled plans to build one of the three pillars of Neom, the Mirror Line, the city of the future. Now the journalists of The Wall Street Journal got acquainted with the construction documentation of the "largest structure in the world."

The "line" will consist of two buildings a little less than 500 meters high, located opposite each other and connected by numerous passages. The total length of the city will be about 120 kilometers, it will pass through the coastal, mountainous and desert areas.

The city is planned to be carbon neutral. There will be no cars in it, and it is planned to receive electricity from renewable sources. A high-speed train will pass inside the complex, the journey from end to end will take no more than 20 minutes. The authors of the project want to place a stadium in the city at an altitude of 300 meters, and build a marina on the shore. In addition, they intend to include vertical farms in the structure of buildings in order to provide residents with food. The population of the city, according to various sources, can be from five to nine million people.

“Vertical multi-level urban communities will challenge traditional, flat, horizontal cities. The design of the Line embodies what urban communities of the future will be: green, free of roads, cars and emissions, ”the crown prince quoted Reuters as saying.

The construction cost of Neom is estimated at $500 billion. $300 billion is needed to implement the first phase of the project, Mohammed ibn Salman said. About half of the amount will be covered by the sovereign wealth fund of the kingdom, and for the rest, the authorities of Saudi Arabia want to attract private investors.

Neom's initial public offering on the Kingdom's stock exchange is scheduled for 2024. It is expected to bring at least a trillion riyals of investment (about $250 billion), and by 2030 the crown prince expects to attract another five trillion. In the same year, the design of the "Line" should be completed. Its construction period may be 50 years.
