In the harsh climate is difficult to live, do housework and work. But nevertheless, some regions with record low temperatures are habitable. Local residents have long adapted to such conditions. And they even find their advantages in them. In particular, they turn the status of the coldest city into a trademark or use it as a marketing ploy for tourists.

Hell (Norway): minus 25 degrees

The name of the post town Hell literally translates as “hell”. Combined with subarctic temperatures, this has become one of the main attractions for tourists. From December to March Hell freezes: temperatures drop to -25 degrees. The cold is felt stronger here than in the Russian capital. High air humidity and searing sea winds make this city one of the harshest inhabited places on earth. The population of the Norwegian town is about one and a half thousand people. People here live in typical Scandinavian wooden houses, ride bicycles and garden in the warmer months.

International Falls (USA): minus 48 degrees

The state of Minnesota is famous not only for its huge number of lakes. But also with its harsh climate. This is where the coldest populated area in continental America is located - the city of International Falls. It is often called the “refrigerator of the nation.” The city is touted as the best place to conduct various tests in severe weather conditions. In January 1909, meteorologists recorded a temperature minimum. Then the frost reached -48,3 degrees. And last winter, before the New Year, the temperature in the city dropped to -38,7 degrees.

Snedge (Canada): minus 63 degrees

The Canadian village of Snedge owes its appearance to the period of the “gold rush” in Alaska. Meteorologists on duty recorded the lowest temperature in the White River Valley in February 1947. It dropped to minus 63 degrees.

Yakutsk (Russia): minus 65 degrees

Yakutsk is the largest city located in the permafrost zone. The temperature minimum was observed in Yakutsk back in February 1891 of the year - minus 64 degrees. Now more than 311 thousand people live in the city. In winter, the daytime here lasts no more than three or four hours, and frost sometimes crosses the 60-degree mark. For example, last January, the temperature dropped to -65.

In Yakutsk, one cannot build subways and subways, since the ice layer here is measured in tens of meters. So that the heat from the buildings does not heat the frost, the houses are built on deeply driven in piles.

Verkhoyansk (Russia): minus 68 degrees

Verkhoyansk is located in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). This small town is officially considered the pole of the cold of the Northern Hemisphere. The city has existed since 1638. Today there are about 1,2 thousand people - few are ready to live in such conditions. Winter in Verkhoyansk is very cold and long. Students are exempted from classes only when the thermometer drops below minus 56 degrees. The minimum temperature recorded in the city is 67,8 degrees below zero.

To build housing in Verkhoyansk is extremely difficult. All local buildings erected from conventional logs and heated with stoves on coal or wood.
