The state capital is not the largest city

Due to the fact that in post-Soviet countries many compare states with regions, this confusion arises. In fact, such a comparison is not entirely correct, because the states have much more significant autonomy. But the point is not so much this, but the fact that the largest city in the state does not at all mean a regional center, as we are accustomed to it.

For example, in California, the capital is not Los Angeles or San Francisco, but Sacramento, which is unfamiliar to many. It is in this city that the largest Russian-speaking community after New York is concentrated. And the Big Apple is not at all the capital of New York State. This role is played by the town of Albany, which is 200 times smaller.

Washington is not located in Washington state

Since New York is located in the state of New York, it would be logical to assume that the capital of the United States, Washington, is also located in the state of Washington. But this is one of the biggest misconceptions, because the capital is not even in the state, but in the District of Columbia. The capital is often called Washington DC (Washington, DC). The state itself, named after the first president, is located several thousand kilometers away - in the west of the country.
