Emma and Liam are followed by such popular names for babies in New York as Noah, Ethan and Jacob for boys, as well as Isabella, Sofia and Mia for girls. This is evidenced by data published on December 30 by the Bureau of Vital Statistics of the Health Department (Health Department's Bureau of Vital Statistics).
Liam replaced the name Jaden, which was popular in the first half of the decade; in 2018, 779 newborns were named after this.
Popular in 2018, the female names Olivia, Sofia and Isabella were replaced by Emma: in 2019, 501 girls were named after that.
Gender neutral names
One of the trends that the city noted last year is the increase in the number of gender-neutral names such as Angel, Avery, Blake and Charlie. Parents say that they choose such names so that the name of their child does not determine his gender.
