The cost of living in the US is rising. It affects Americans everywhere, but people who live in notoriously expensive states are hit particularly hard. GOBankingRates recently conducted a study using data from Zillow, Sperling's Best Places, the Missouri Center for Economic Research and Information, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics to identify the cheapest cities in the most expensive states. This data includes home value in May 2023, total cost of living index, and average annual expenses.

As a result, we have the 10 most expensive states to live in and the most affordable cities in each of them. Cities are ranked from cheapest to most expensive.

Hawaii

As of May 2023, the median home value in Hawaii was $964, the typical annual expense in the state was $786, and the overall cost of living index was 119.
