Safest cars 2017 of the year

Over the past few years, automakers have added high-tech features and capabilities to their models to get high marks from consumers.

This year, apparently, automakers focused on such a detail, which can hardly be called the pinnacle of technological thought. It's about the headlights.

The Insurance Institute for Road Safety issued a message stating that standards for headlamp manufacturers will become tougher. Now the requirements will be tougher for those who receive the Top Safety Pick Plus sign.

As a result, only 38 vehicles of the 2017 range of the year can meet the highest safety standards. Last year there were 76.

“We have raised the bar,” said Andrian Lund, head of IIHS. “We have noticed that recently automakers have stopped paying due attention to how headlights illuminate the road.”

Interestingly, many automakers supply their models with rather non-standard solutions. Change the angles of illumination of the headlights, however, it does not always work to the benefit of the driver. Many headlights are still not able to provide the necessary visibility.

Toyota and its luxury brand, Lexus, have received top marks from the Top Safety Pick Plus for 9 models, including the Corolla, Prius, Camry, RAV4 and Lexus RX and NX.

Honda and its Acura brand were able to defend five models, including the Pilot SUV.

It is noteworthy that of the largest manufacturers of 6, only Ford could not earn the highest rating for any of its models.

Chevrolet Volt, Hyundai Elantra (sedan only, 2016 build after March), Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius (2016 build after August).

Genesis G80, Genesis G90, Lexus RC.

Small SUVs

Mazda CX-3, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester (build after October 2016), Toyota RAV4.

Mid-size SUVs

Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe (build after March 2016).

Mid-size luxury SUVs

Acura MDX, Acura RDX, Audi Q5, Buick Envision, Lexus NX, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Volvo XC60.

Minivan

Chrysler Pacifica (build after August 2016).

Large pickup

Honda Ridgeline.
