Self-driving car Uber 'saw' the cyclist, but still hit her

Uber's self-driving car knocked a cyclist to death in Arizona because of a software crash that determines which objects on the road to ignore and which ones to pay attention to. Writes TJournal This was reported by The Information sources close to the investigation of the incident.

According to the interlocutors of the publication, the system could not “not see” the cyclist Helene Hertzberg before the collision, since she was right in front of the lidar (the “eyes” of the car) and front cameras. However, the car did not honk and did not even slow down.

Sources of The Information explained that the part of the software of the machine that is responsible for the logic after the recognition of objects is to blame. To prevent the self-driving car from “panicking” at the sight of each new obstacle, the system introduced the ability in the manner of people to ignore some minor things, for example, a motorcycle parked by the road.

Specialists manually set the sensitivity of this function. And it seems that the car that hit the cyclist was determined to ignore even the objects she was supposed to pay attention to. She recognized the girl, but did not consider her presence on the road a reason for stopping.
