Passengers on an Air China flight from Beijing to Los Angeles had to be evacuated from the plane for fear that it would “explode” after an emergency landing in Russia’s subarctic region of Anadyr, Chukotka. It is the easternmost city in the country, where the temperature that day was -20 Celsius.

Eyewitnesses said that there were “screams and panic” on board - it was assumed that a fire had broken out in the Boeing 777 cabin, writes The Daily Mail. According to passengers, the flight attendant shouted: “Drop everything, evacuate immediately! The plane will explode!

Frames of the video taken after landing show how 188 passengers descend emergency ramps, many of which land quite abruptly on the asphalt.

It is reported that the alarm system detected a suspected fire in the luggage compartment. After this, the Chinese crew of the plane immediately requested to land at the nearest airport - it turned out to be the airport of Anadyr, Chukotka region (once, by the way, the governor of this region was Roman Abramovich).

Russian sources said the fire “was not confirmed,” but a backup flight was later sent from the Chinese capital to pick up the passengers.

“Passengers planned to have dinner in Hollywood but instead ended up on the floor in one of the darkest cities in the world,” comments on social media read.

In pictures from Twitter The Siberian Times you can see the passengers lying on the floor in a small airport terminal in Anadyr, a city with a population of 15 500 people.

Deputy Governor Leonid Nikolaev said: “All passengers were accommodated in the international flights area and in the VIP lounge of the airport. They are provided with food and drink. There are doctors on site."

No injuries were reported.
