San Francisco plane makes emergency landing in Russia
An Air India aircraft flying from New Delhi to San Francisco, California, made an unplanned diversion from its route to Magadan, Russia. What happened, said the publication Aviation Source News.

Air India AI173 on a Boeing 777-200LR operated a scheduled flight from Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
The aircraft subsequently made an unscheduled maneuver and landed at Magadan's Sokol Airport (GDX) in Russia.

This is an Air India Boeing 777-200ER with registration number VT-ALH built 13 years ago.
The plane is currently on the ground in Magadan. In response to a social media query, Air India stated: "Flight AI173 has been rejected for unavoidable reasons and our team is working hard to minimize the inconvenience caused."

An Air India spokesman confirmed that a technical problem with one of the aircraft's engines was the reason for the rejection. The Boeing 777 is currently undergoing mandatory ground checks in Magadan.
The AI173 was carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew members, and the airline says passengers will be given alternative options for arriving at their destination as soon as possible.
Sokol Airport, formally Vladimir Vysotsky International Airport, is an airport in the city of Sokol in the Magadan region of Russia.

This airport is sometimes confused with the Dolinsk-Sokol airbase on Sakhalin Island, where the fighter jets that downed Korean Air Flight 007 in 1983 were based.
GDX is served by a number of airlines including Aeroflot, S7 Airlines and Ural Airlines. There are direct flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg and a number of other Russian cities. It receives a number of international flights, including to China, South Korea and Japan.
