On one of the most beautiful trails in California, on the winding section of the 1 Highway, in the area of the main tourist attraction - the coast of Big Sur, a major landslide came down. A third mile of the roadway of the famous highway along the central coast of California, was under the rubble of stones and mud.
In some places, debris has reached heights up to 40 feet, a spokesman for the California Department of Transportation said.
Authorities say the landslide closed a roadway in the Big Sur area. “Large landslide. We've never seen anything like this," said Colin Jones, a spokesman for the area's transportation department.
Authorities have already closed part of the 1 Highway to repair damage caused by the last landslide, and those that arose earlier as a result of California’s rainiest winter in a decade.
Last week, the authorities recalled repair brigades, as the ground saturated with water made the situation in the area dangerous.
Transport officials plan to wait for the reduction of the risk of a new collapse, before carrying out work to strengthen the slopes and reopen the damaged part of the road.
The harsh winter blocked at least another 2 stretch of road in the area, which led to the closure of a number of resorts along the coast. Those who continued to work had to use helicopters to transport guests and necessary cargo.
The narrow, windswept 1 Highway that passes through the coast of Big Sur is a popular tourist attraction.
