Saakashvili asks Poroshenko to introduce units of the National Guard into Odessa. VIDEO
The governor of the Odessa region, Mikhail Saakashvili, called on the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, to introduce into Odessa additional units of the National Guard and police to ensure public order.
In its video message on Facebook page Saakashvili expressed concern about recent events in the city, including the shelling of the Pivdenny bank from a grenade launcher on the evening of April 25 and the attack on the night of April 26 on a tent camp of demonstrators demanding the resignation of Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov.
According to Saakashvili, the city authorities are not making adequate efforts to resolve the conflict, but, on the contrary, indulge provocations.
According to the Odessa City Internal Affairs Directorate, at about 4 a.m. on Dumskaya Square in front of the Odessa City Hall, “unidentified persons of about 20 people wearing masks on their faces” began to destroy the camp.
In his address, Saakashvili called the attackers “titushki.”
The entrance to the Odessa City Council, which was previously blocked by activists, is already open. Protesters are still on the scene, and law enforcement officials are watching over the observance of public order.
Gennady Trukhanov was declared the winner on mayoral election cities in October 2015, despite the proposal of the head of the regional administration, Mikhail Saakashvili, to organize a second round.
ForumDaily reported earlier on the conflict between the former Georgian president and the government of Arseny Yatsenyuk and the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov.
