From the new year restaurants in California are obliged to make a free bonus to the children's order
Starting in January 1, restaurants in California that offer children's complex sets of dishes will have to offer water or non-flavored milk as the default beverage in accordance with the new law aimed at reducing the consumption of soda, juice and other sweet drinks among young people.
Senator Bill Monning's SB 1192 Act also prohibits the display of sugary drinks on the menu and advertising baby food, writes Public Capital Radio. At the same time, parents will still be able to choose a drink for their child at their own discretion if the “default” option does not suit them.
Local resident Shauna Messmore and her five-year-old daughter Belle say that with this law, little will change in their lives.
“We always order water for her. And then she can have milk with her food,” the mother says over a slice of pizza and lemonade in a Sacramento food court. “But we don’t buy her a soda unless it’s a special occasion—like she got a really good grade or something.”
Messmore believes soda is a bad choice for children because of its high sugar content—"it rots teeth and makes kids hyperactive." The woman said she thought milk and water were the best choice.
David McCray, a visitor to the nearest Jack in the Box restaurant, says he will still buy sweet drinks for his grandchildren if they want them.
“It seems to me that a person should get what he wants,” said the man, although his wife Elide disagreed with him.
Some fast food outlets, such as McDonald's, Burger King, and Subway, have already stopped advertising soda with baby food. But not everybody followed their example.
Along with tasteless milk and water, restaurants will be able to offer carbonated and flavored water without added sweeteners.
After the bill was signed into law in September, Monning reported that "the state is in the midst of a public health crisis with rates of preventable diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes skyrocketing, due in large part to increased consumption of sugary foods." drinks."
He described the law as part of a strategy to combat this crisis.
