Beginning July to receive unemployment benefits in California, you will need to prove that you are looking for a job.

The California Department of Employment Development said that as of July 11, 2021, anyone receiving unemployment benefits will have to prove they are looking for a job. This is not an innovation, but a return to regulations that were in effect until March 2020, when the federal government allowed states to suspend the requirement. Writes about it Mercury News.

Note that the recommendations differ slightly depending on whether the person is receiving regular unemployment benefits or COVID-19 unemployment assistance.

For those receiving regular unemployment benefits, the agency offers the following guidelines:

• Prepare for your job search —Create an account with CalJOBS, participate in reemployment services, post a profile on various job search sites or online resources.
• Expand networks. Tell friends, former employers, or community members that you are looking for a job. Participate in networking events, job fairs.
• Apply for a suitable job - Apply for vacancies with employers who are expected to have suitable vacancies that match your skills and experience.
• Participate in training - Take advantage of educational and training opportunities that help you get a job and do not interfere with your ability to obtain suitable full-time employment.

For those receiving pandemic unemployment benefits (PUA), the agency recommends:

• Rebuild your business - look for new or additional clients, promote your business, prepare or apply for a new contract.
• Expand networks — attend networking events, participate in relevant seminars.
• Create accounts - For independent contractors who participated in an online platform, create an account on another platform that matches your qualifications.
• Participate in training - Enroll in courses that will help your business without hindering your ability to return to full-time self-employment.

A PUA applicant who no longer wants to pursue self-employment (or was previously employed but was not eligible for regular PUA benefits) can seek work in the same way as a regular unemployment benefit recipient. In addition, there may be pandemic-related exceptions to the job search requirement for PUA recipients, such as providing primary care to a person diagnosed with COVID-19 or a child who is unable to attend school due to a health emergency due to with COVID-19.
