From 2018, Lithuania will officially call Georgia “Sakartvelo,” the publication writes. Neue Zuercher Zeitung.
“Starting 2018, Vilnius will officially call Georgia “Sakartvelo”. Tbilisi does not like the word “Georgia,” said Chairman of the Lithuanian Seimas Viktoras Pranckietis.
The name "Georgia" is of Russian origin. In 2011, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs under then-President Mikheil Saakashvili called on other states to use the name "Sakartvelo".
According to Georgian officials, the use of the name given by Russia reminds residents of the country that their northern neighbor ruled them for 200 years (from 1801 year), suppressing their language and culture, not to mention the 2008 military campaign of the year.
However, only South Korea took the decision to change the name. Lithuania, Latvia and Japan, to which the appeal was also sent, rejected this request, and the Czech Republic stated that it “took into account the wish” of the Georgians, but did not take any further action.
