Russian-speaking scientist in the United States created a device for extracting water from the air in the desert
Scientists from the University of Berkeley have created a catchment basin that can operate in extreme conditions. One of the members of the group that made this discovery is chemist Yevgeny Kapustin, who, according to his profile in LinkedIn, before starting work in Berkeley, graduated from Novosibirsk State University in Russia.
The device can collect water even from dry desert air, reports the publication TJ.
The basis of the collection is a powder of metal and organic compounds. It works like a sponge: water enters the powder and remains in it.
The device requires only solar energy. At night, the device collects water, and during the day it evaporates due to solar heat. A pound of powder collects a third of a glass of clean drinking water.
Scientists want to create a cheaper version of aluminum-based powder to solve the problem of access to clean drinking water worldwide.
