Russian landlord received 5 years in prison for fraud with Medicaid
In New York, the Brooklyn Supreme Court sentenced 67-year-old landlord Yuri Baumlit to five years in prison for fraud with Medicaid insurance and ill-treatment of tenants, writes Daily News.
Baumlit pleaded guilty to fraud, theft on a large scale and illegal eviction of tenants. The man threw tenants into the street without a court order, broke kitchen stoves so that tenants could not cook, and also locked up apartments and did not let tenants into apartments.
In one of the cases, Baumlit took the bed from one of the tenants. The man slept on the floor for four months and then sued Baumlit to return the bed.
During the arrest of Baumlit and his wife Rimma and a search in their house for $ 3 million, law enforcement officers seized fur coats, designer bags and a car Mercedes Benz.
Baumlit lived in Brighton Beach and managed state-funded shelters designed for people with a difficult financial situation who could rent apartments until they got to their feet.
The man also forced tenants to attend drug treatment programs in order to receive illegal kickbacks from service providers Medicaid. The Baumlit family received payments based on the number of drug dependence treatment sessions that residents of the doss house underwent.
Last month, Baumlit spouses pleaded guilty to the scam they earned $ 1,5 million.
The state attorney's office was investigating a program fraud case. Medicaid, and the prosecutors of Brooklyn studied the allegations of ill-treatment of tenants.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said that Baumlit “was hunting vulnerable people who desperately needed housing. He did this to fill his pockets and deserves to go to jail for fraud and abusive behavior. ”
