How a Ukrainian woman came to the USA without knowing English, but became a teacher and an Internet star

Today she is blonde with an American smile, a prestigious education and a blog about life in the United States, which has 1,3 million followers. Ukrainian woman told about her path "Voice of America".

“I don’t know what it means to be a blogger at all. It's not such an interesting topic. Let's better talk about men, about my three marriages ... ”- Alena America says with a smile.

About husbands, children and even grandchildren - it goes without saying. For six years of daily posts on Instagram, Alena realized that it makes no sense to hide something on social networks.

“In 2007, I came to the USA. My son turned six, daughter - 19. I was 39 years old, I got married. I came without knowing English and brought crystal chandeliers with me, ”Alena shares her experience.

Then it seemed to an immigrant from Kharkov that in the United States it was bad not only with crystal, but also with taste in general, and also with mathematics in schools. Therefore, at 39, Alena became a student at a local college.

“I realized that the only way to learn English is to go to study. And I decided to become a math teacher. Here, every person who studied in the Soviet Union is able to be a teacher of mathematics, ”says Alena.

At the school in a dysfunctional town in Illinois, the new teacher's hobby was not suspected. Another thing was surprising - the lagging high school students suddenly took the lead in math tests. True, when they learned to count, questions arose that were not on the topic.

“That's how it was. The first day of school, I tell the rules: “you must do this, you must do this, in the beginning there will be this... Any questions?” The hand goes up. “What is your question?” “How did you manage to get 100 followers on Instagram?”

Now in daily stories she is asked about everything. For example, how to leave and how to return, whom to marry and whom to vote for, where to live and where to study. Alena no longer works at school, but continues to educate her subscribers.

“They think that in the USA there are no genuine smiles. Sincere! Sincere smiles! If there are times when they are not sincere, it is very rare, but for the most part, yes. They also think that Americans don't like Russians. Ordinary American people love Russians, not only Russians, but all Russian speakers. She loves me and treats me normally,” says Alena.

Unlike glamorous Russian influencers (a public figure), Alena does not have a team of PR assistants. There is a photographer friend, there is an assistant in Ukraine and a country where you can travel endlessly. Today it is the oldest city in St. Louis (Missouri), tomorrow the most famous New York, and then everywhere.

“I started my blog when I felt lonely living on the outskirts of some small town. I came home from work - there was nothing to do, so I began to write my thoughts. Take away all subscribers from me, take away from me altogether, I will still lead it. Maybe there will be fewer posts, but I will still do all this, because I enjoy it, "says Alena.

There are 800 million Instagram users, and half of them are not 35. Alena is more, but it is experience that suggests that nothing is ever too late, but you need to live and post here, now, preferably without a filter.

“When I write a post about where and what happened in the USA, for example about protests, people answer: “Oh God, now I will never go to the States in my life.” But it’s still a cool country, no matter what happens here. She gives you a chance whenever you want to take it,” the blogger shares his experience.

Alena did not miss her chance. Almost 3 thousand of her posts, as chapters of an unfinished novel about a small single woman with two children and brown hair, who once firmly decided to live another life, changing her country, fate and hairstyle.
