Luxury yacht Russian vodka magnate moored near Manhattan
New Yorkers willingly share in Twitter and Instagram photos of a sparkling luxury yacht moored in midtown Manhattan. The name of the yacht is “Serena”. The length of her deck is 132 meters, the yacht has 5 levels, several swimming pools and 2 helipads. According to the yacht's builders, the best parts of the yacht are hidden inside - an underwater observation room, a climbing wall, a children's playroom and cabins for 24 people and 52 crew members.
Quick search in Google allows us to find out that the owner of the yacht is Yuri Shefler, the owner of an alcohol business empire in Russia and Ukraine. He owns the Stolichnaya Vodka brand. Shefler has British citizenship and has not been to Russia for 12 years, although his company was founded there Scheffler, SPI Group. According to Sheflera, he is currently in business in New York.
Scheffler has been involved in public friction with Russian President Vladimir Putin for many years. The controversy centered on the Russian government's attempts to seize the oligarch's company and "nationalize his assets." After refusing to transfer the company to state control, the Russian government issued an arrest warrant for Scheffler.
Shefler publicly criticizes Vladimir Putin’s policies, including on the Ukrainian issue. “If Russia were a democratic country like the United States, and Crimea asked for its help to protect itself from a hostile neighbor, then this would be understandable. I feel sorry for the residents of Crimea. There are no laws in Russia. There is only one law and it is called “Putin”. Only one justice. It’s called “Putin,” the businessman notes.
For Shefler, as for his boat, New York was a safe marina. At least for now.
