A party in Russia has filed a request to grant Elon Musk political asylum in the Russian Federation: he himself did not ask for it

Russian authorities are considering a request from the New People party to grant political asylum to American tech billionaire Elon Musk, writes Kyiv Independent.

Vladislav Davankov, a member of the New People party and deputy chairman of the State Duma, told reporters at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 20 that his party had officially asked the Russian Foreign Ministry to grant Musk asylum. According to him, the request is scheduled to be reviewed within a month.

“I think Elon Musk has made mistakes, but those mistakes should be forgiven,” Davankov said. “If something doesn’t work out for him, we are always ready to accept him – from a technological and visionary point of view, he is very impressive.”

These statements could not be independently confirmed, and there was no official comment from the Russian Foreign Ministry or Musk himself. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment: “Let’s wait for statements from the Foreign Ministry or Musk himself before saying anything.”

The announcement of the request follows a public spat between Musk and US President Donald Trump this month. The billionaire soon expressed regret over a series of critical posts about Trump, calling the proposed government spending bill “disgusting” and warning of potential economic consequences.

Trump's response came on June 5 during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. On Truth Social, the president wrote that Musk had "lost his mind."

The billionaire then wrote on social media that Trump owed his election victory to him, implying that it was his influence that prevented Democrats from retaining control of the House of Representatives.

And just recently, the deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Dmitry Novikov, told the state news agency TASS that, if necessary, Russia would be ready to grant Musk political asylum.

"I think Musk is playing a completely different game, and he will not need political asylum. However, if such a need arises, Russia will certainly be able to provide it," Novikov said on June 6.

The conflict has caught the attention of politicians in Russia, where Musk is increasingly seen as a sympathetic figure. Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev jokingly suggested on the social network X that Moscow could act as a mediator in reconciling “D and I” (Donald and Elon) in exchange for a stake in Starlink.

“Don’t fight, guys,” Medvedev wrote.

Musk chaired the federal Commission on Government Effectiveness until May 30 and played a key role in scaling back U.S. foreign aid agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which has provided billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine.

Although Musk initially supported Ukraine (providing Starlink satellite systems for its defense), over time he began to broadcast pro-Russian talking points, claiming that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lacked popular support and accusing Kyiv of conducting an “endless mobilization meat grinder.”

In addition, Musk has spoken out against providing military aid to Ukraine from the United States, which coincides with the Kremlin's position aimed at weakening Western support for Kyiv.
