Rubio banned diplomats from using the Calibri font, saying it was 'too wasteful'
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered diplomats to revert to using Times New Roman instead of Calibri, reversing a change made under the Biden administration, according to reports. Air force.
Rubio's predecessor, Antony Blinken, introduced the Calibri font in 2023, arguing that it was more accessible to people with visual impairments. But Rubio called this a "wasteful" move toward diversity and noted that Times New Roman is "more formal and professional."
The new rules came into force on December 10 and apply not only to internal but also external documents.
Lucas de Groot, the Dutch designer behind the Calibri typeface, told BBC Newshour the change was "sad and funny."

"Calibri was designed to be easier to read on modern computer screens. It was chosen to replace TNR (Times New Roman)—the very font Rubio now wants to return to," de Groot explained.
A State Department spokesperson told the BBC that the switch to Times New Roman is in line with President Donald Trump's mission to "present a unified, professional voice in all communications."
"Aligning the department's practices with this standard ensures that our communications reflect the same dignity, consistency, and formality expected in official government correspondence," the official said.
Times New Roman is a serif font, meaning it has small lines extending from the ends of letters. Courts, legislative bodies, and other agencies typically use this more formal-looking font. Calibri is a sans-serif font, considered easier to read on screens, especially for those with vision or reading disabilities.
In his December 9 order directing diplomats to revert to Times New Roman, Rubio called his predecessor Antony Blinken's decision to use Calibri a "wasteful" diversity initiative, according to an internal department document obtained by Reuters.
