Christmas Present: Los Angeles Church Repays $ 5,3 Million Medical Debt

The Los Angeles Christian Assembly Church is making a generous gift to those who need it most - it will pay off multimillion-dollar medical debts of low-income residents in 28 city blocks, writes People.

Tom Hughes, one of the leading pastors of the Christian Assembly Church, announced in a video that the church would pay $ 5,3 million in medical debt to poor Los Angeles residents.

“Thanks to the generosity of Christian Assembly Church, we are able to give a Christmas gift to the people of Los Angeles with no strings attached,” Hughes said.

Hughes added that "medical debt is a crushing burden" and that they have targeted areas where they have 15 or more families who attend church, for a total of 28 blocks.

“We worked with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt,” he said. “We learned that in these 28 neighborhoods there is $5,3 million in outstanding medical debt owed to people earning less than half the federal poverty line.”

Thanks to the help of the church, each person will receive a letter by mail stating that his medical debt has been paid off. The church and the RIP Medical Debt will also work with credit unions to repair credit damage from the medical debt of the poor.

“While they are recovering from their illness, this will help them get back on their feet and avoid homelessness,” Hughes said, noting the gesture will impact more than 5000 families in the area.

The church raised about $50 last year. Not knowing what to do with it at first, the church ultimately decided to use the funds for this year's Christmas gift. “We are excited to share this gift because of the generosity of God,” Hughes said.
