A sheriff's office spokesman said the suspect opened fire with multiple weapons, allegedly firing hundreds of bullets over a three-hour period.
"In the extremely dark and densely vegetated area, gunshots from weapons of various calibers could be heard, making it difficult for police officers to immediately locate the person or persons responsible for the shooting," a law enforcement official said.
Using a drone, the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Vicente Joseph Arroyo of Salinas, was found in a wrecked vehicle parked in a vineyard off Avery Lane.
The shooter killed about 80 animals, including chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, ducks and a small pony.
Some of the animals were only injured and taken to the Monterey County SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), but were later euthanized due to the severity of their injuries.
Several long-barreled rifles, shotguns and handguns, including illegal assault weapons, as well as several loaded and empty magazines were found at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, but there is no further threat, according to a sheriff's office spokesman.
