Russia is waiting for new US sanctions: what came up with the Democrats

The future head of the Committee on Foreign Relations - the main body of the US House of Representatives, which is responsible, among other things, for sanctions against Russia - Democrat Eliot Engel warned about new economic measures that await the Kremlin, writes “Today«.

In an interview with AFP, a member of the lower house of Congress from the state of New York admitted that he was still outraged by Russia's interference in the presidential election in 2016.

According to him, under the leadership of the Democratic Party, the House of Representatives will be ready to punish Russia.

“I think if we credibly establish that there was interference in our elections, sanctions should certainly follow,” said Engel, noting that there is no doubt about Trump’s collusion with Russia.

Leading the committee, Engel will be able to call witnesses from the administration. He wants to use this opportunity to get answers to questions about what happened during the closed meeting of US President Donald Trump with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Helsinki and other administration diplomatic meetings.

“The United States must remain the leader of the free world and a country that people look up to. Now they are not equal to us. We have become a laughing stock. We are here, there, and everywhere,” says the congressman.

In addition, the expert predicted that the results of the mid-term elections to the US Congress and the victory of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives would not alter the US foreign policy towards the Washington sanctions regime against Russia in a special way.

As we have already written, according to the head of the Accounts Chamber of Russia, if the White House imposes additional sanctions on Russia, the country’s economy will begin a recession.
