Russia was obliged to pay $ 44,4 million to Ukraine for the Crimea

A permanent court of arbitration in The Hague decided to recover from Russia 44,4 a million dollars of compensation in favor of Ukrnafta for the loss of its property in Crimea after the annexation by Russia.

The court decision was taken on April 12. In addition to 44,4 million dollars of compensation for property, Russia is obliged to pay interest on the amount (5,5 million dollars) and compensate arbitration expenses (3,5 million dollars).

Meanwhile, Russia does not recognize the decision of the international arbitration court.

“The Russian Federation did not participate in the consideration of this claim. It does not recognize the legality of the decision, primarily due to the lack of jurisdiction of the arbitration tribunal to consider this claim,” the department said in response to a request TASS.

The Ministry of Justice noted that “Russia plans to challenge this decision and use all available legal protection mechanisms provided for by international law and Swiss legislation.” According to the department, the Russian side did not receive through official diplomatic channels the decision on the claim of the Ukrnafta company, issued on April 12 by international arbitration at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

Ukrnafta opened a dispute in international arbitration in 2015. Russia tried to challenge this in the Swiss Supreme Court in 2018, but the claim was rejected.
