Russian woman in New York sentenced for two years for marriage fraud
29 is a Russian citizen, Yana Potapova, who lives in Schenectady (New York), received 2 of probation for conspiracy to commit marital fraud.
In addition to a suspended sentence, senior federal judge Thomas McAvoy sentenced the accused to 50 public work hours, reports Slavic sacramento.
According to According to the investigation, in April, 2014, Potapova and US citizen Brett Thompson agreed to enter into a bogus marriage so that Potapova could get her legal immigration status. Potapova illegally remained in the States after the expiration of the validity of the guest visa.
In exchange for entering into and preserving a fictitious marriage, Thompson received about 3 500 dollars from Potapova. In May 2015, Potapova provided the US Citizenship and Immigration Services with false information that she and Thompson were living together in Albany.
When it became known about the scam, Potapov was arrested. She spent 60 days in Albany County jail due to immigration violations that are still under investigation.
Earlier, Thompson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit marital fraud. He is now awaiting sentencing.
