Russian, who survived in Syria, spoke about a three-hour fight with the Americans

Radio Liberty received an audio recording with a short story about a three-hour battle that occurred on the evening of February 7 in Syria, near the city of Deir ez-Zor. The person who made it (the recording was originally sent to him as a sound message to one of his friends) claims that he was a participant in this clash, moreover, he commanded one of the divisions. He agreed to tell more Radio Liberty about what happened that day.

As a result of an unsuccessful attempt to take control of the oil refinery, which is controlled by the Arab-Kurdish units of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and American military advisers, according to various estimates, from 15 to 600 Russian mercenaries were killed.

“They worked through everything that happened to us. In short, we were going in three companies to seize the plant. In the first 200 losses, the two hundredth, I talked to Mityai there. In the second there are about 20, I ..… (I don’t know), there are none of ours there. In ours - 75. This is ...... (horror), since 14 there have been no such losses. I say we were handed over. If not the boys from the Arbat military district (“Arbat military district” is what the military calls the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff, located in the center of Moscow. – Note RS), then locals, 100%. They had everything. There were MANPADS. They simply delivered it to them on a ……….. (huge) scale. No one came when we were picked up from the turntable……. (they fired at it). It’s night, dark, we have two... DShK (Dyagterev-Shpagina large-caliber machine gun. - Note RS). What will we do? ...... (a complete nightmare), in short!

By Friday, journalists and independent investigators were able to establish the identity of 9 victims through social media posts. Basically, they are residents of the Russian province, who, as follows from an interview with their relatives, left to fight in Syria due to financial difficulties.

Interlocutor Radio Liberty (he did not reveal his name) is interesting because, according to him, he is a resident of Moscow, and one of his motives for leaving for the war was “boredom in civilian life.” He said that he was 30 years old and had a good track record and recommendations, so he was hired as a mercenary in Syria after an interview and medical examination. Before that, in 2014-2015, he managed to visit Donbass as an instructor.

“In the years 14–15, as an instructor, like most of our people, I taught the locals how to fight, although when it really started, I did it five times and went to the front line for two weeks,” says the man.

Then he described in detail the events of February 7 themselves and how the Russian offensive developed:

“As it developed, so it degraded. The main group removed a couple of “secrets”, and from about a kilometer away they opened fire from small arms and mortars. My group flanked the plant. …… (the nightmare) began when the main line approached the plant at about 400–500 meters - along them ……. (hit) with cannon artillery. After the shelling it began to get dark. Same with night lights (night vision devices. - Note PC) complete...... (a nightmare), and there were no people willing to storm blindly, they decided to continue the assault. Moreover, about half of the “ribbon” group (in military jargon - columns. - Approx. RS) We were just approaching the battlefield; they were supposed to replace us when we captured the plant. And then suddenly….., the turntables arrived. Pair ……. (she fired at) those closest to the plant, the couple worked the ribbon. As a result, there are no cars, ……… (quickly leave the battlefield) nothing to drive, and these …… are playing at a shooting gallery with a thermal imager. Moreover, they hung in one place for a long time: naturally they knew that our air defense was naked... and then one for three.”

The Russian added that he did not know what kind of plant it was or whose it was, he only knew that it was an oil refinery. According to him, the locals could have surrendered them, since the enemy knew for sure that the attacking group had no air defense. When he led the unit on a mission, he did not think that there were American troops there. The number of dead Russians is estimated at 200–250 people, and the same number of wounded. The latter were carried out by the survivors themselves, and for the dead - a “funeral”.

The mercenary estimates the number of Russian military to Syrian in a ratio of roughly 70 to 30, and adds that even after such a dip, the flow of mercenaries to Syria will not decrease.

“Will the flow of people wishing to weaken? Thank you, I laughed. For such money, we have three applicants for the place and the flow shows no sign of weakening,” he declares.

He considers it a normal practice to have Russian paramilitary units, for which the Ministry of Defense bears no official responsibility.

According to a Pentagon spokesman, Lt. Gen. Geoffrey Harrigiana, US military advisers contacted with the Ministry of Defense, but having received the answer that there is no Russian military in this area, they began a response operation.
