Russian tried to take out the orangutan from Indonesia, pumping him with sleeping pills

Tourist Andrei Zhestkov tried to take Denpasar (Bali, Indonesia) from the airport to go home to Russia into a stupefied orangutan, laid in a suitcase. Zhestkov reportedly planned to keep the pet as a pet.

Zhestkov was arrested at the 22 airport in March in the evening when he passed a security check before flying to Russia, writes The Guardian. Employees opened his suitcase and found a sleeping orangutan about two years old there, who was lying in a rattan basket.

“We believe the orangutan was given allergy pills to make it sleepy. We found these pills in a suitcase,” said Bali nature conservation agency spokesman Ketut Katur Marbawa. “Zhestkov looked prepared, as if he was transporting a child,” the employee added.

According to Marbava, the 27-year-old man also packed a baby mix and blankets for an orangutan into a suitcase. In the tourist's suitcase, the police found two live geckos and five lizards.

Zhestkov informed the authorities that another Russian, a tourist in Bali, who had bought primate for 3000 dollars at a street market in Java, presented him an orangutan of a protected species. He argued that a friend who had already left Indonesia, convinced him of the possibility of transporting the animal and home maintenance.

According to Marbava, the Russian citizen faces up to five years in prison and a fine of 7 thousand dollars for smuggling.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, orangutans are a critically endangered species. There are about 100 thousand of them left all over the world. Plantation workers and villagers in Indonesia often attack orangutans as pests, and poachers capture and sell them for use as pets.
