Russia has banned the import of a number of goods from Ukraine

Russia imposed a ban on the supply of a number of food products and raw materials from Ukraine.

“Russia is introducing a ban on the import of a number of Ukrainian goods. This is a response to sanctions restrictions from Ukraine,” Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev wrote on Twitter.

The document contains a 7-page list of prohibited goods, among them:

• wheat;
• sunflower oil;
• sturgeon fish and caviar;
• chocolate, bread, flour confectionery and cakes;
• vegetables, fruits and nuts;
• malt beer, wines, liqueurs and other spirits;
• jams and marmalade.

In addition, Russia has banned the import of detergents, wallpaper, paper, some equipment for agriculture, women's pads and tampons, as well as baby diapers from Ukraine.

“The Russian government may decide to cancel the special economic measures being introduced if Ukraine lifts the restrictive measures previously introduced in relation to specific Russian goods,” the press service of the Russian government reported.

The import of goods in the list in 2018 was estimated at 510 million dollars. Total imports of Ukrainian goods from Ukraine to Russia in 2017 amounted to almost 5 billion dollars.

The fact that Russia intends to impose additional restrictions on the import of goods from Ukraine, Medvedev said October 23.

“Although Ukrainian colleagues do not particularly emphasize this, in general, Ukraine’s trade turnover with Russia is very significant. We are talking about billions of rubles, and for Ukraine this trade turnover is one of the most intense. In other words, Russia, despite all the recent difficulties, despite all the bans and restrictions that they have already imposed on our country, maintains this trade turnover,” he said.

Russia already has a ban on the supply of certain goods from Ukraine. Russia imposed a food embargo on Ukrainian goods in 2016. Then meat, fish, dairy products, vegetables, fruits and salt were banned.

In response, Ukraine introduced similar measures for Russian goods. In particular, the Ukrainian government has banned importing dairy products, tea, coffee, beer and other alcohol, cattle, poultry and pork, shampoos and shower gels, as well as railway equipment from Russia. 18 December, the Ukrainian government extended the embargo until the end of 2019.

Despite the tense relations between Russia and Ukraine and the effect of mutual sanctions, trade turnover between the countries is growing. According to the Federal Customs Service (FCS) of Russia, in the first half of 2018, exports from Russia to Ukraine increased by 30,3% and amounted to $3,629 billion, and exports from Ukraine to Russia increased by 26,3% (to $2,209 billion) .

According to the FCS, the largest share of imports from Ukraine to Russia is accounted for by metals and products from them, machinery and equipment, as well as products of the chemical industry. The largest share of exports from Russia to Ukraine is mineral products.
