Russia imposed sanctions against Ukraine: who will suffer the most

What happened

• Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a government decree on restrictions on Ukraine. 322 individuals and 68 legal entities are subject to sanctions.
• Sanctions can be lifted if Ukraine cancels anti-Russian restrictions.
• Among those who fell under the restrictions - the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov, the leader of the "Batkivschina" Yulia Tymoshenko, and Alexei Poroshenko, whose data coincide with the data of the son of President Petro Poroshenko.
• Restrictions affect the largest Ukrainian companies. Among them are the structures of Rinat Akhmetov and Igor Kolomoisky. Sanctions have covered a variety of industries: chemical, food, metallurgy, financial and others.
• Sanctions include freezing of non-cash funds, property located in Russia, as well as the transfer of money from Russia, as announced by the government in late October.

What preceded the imposition of sanctions

• At the end of May, Ukraine expanded anti-Russian sanctions. The updated lists included Oleg Deripaska, co-owner of UC Rusal, Alexey Miller, head of Gazprom, Andrei Kostin, head of VTB, and others. The list of goods prohibited for import from Russia was also expanded. For example, Kiev has banned the import of Russian slate.
• In October, Ukraine joined the September extension of anti-Russian sanctions by the Council of Europe.
• In October, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the introduction of new sanctions in response to the "unfriendly actions of Ukraine." He signed the corresponding decree. The Kremlin stressed that the restrictions will not affect ordinary Ukrainian citizens.

Reaction

• Member of the Collegium of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Rada deputy Anton Gerashchenko, told RBC that he had never dealt with Russia, therefore he finds himself on the sanctions list as symbolic. “You can congratulate me,” he said.
• Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev instructed to prevent the negative impact of new sanctions against Ukraine on companies from Russia. The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade will have to “ensure the balance of commodity markets.”
• The Kremlin stressed that the initiator of the imposition of sanctions was Ukraine. Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the restrictions against Kiev a forced retaliatory measure.
• The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Pavel Klimkin, in his Twitter called Russian sanctions the “teaser of the series”, which is designed to influence the country on the eve of presidential and parliamentary elections.
• The person involved in the sanctions list of politician Yulia Tymoshenko is not worried about the restrictions imposed, since she does not have a business in Russia. She wrote about this in her Facebook. Tymoshenko also noted that Roshen, which is indirectly controlled by the Ukrainian President Poroshenko, is not on the list.
