Russia decided to get involved in another war
By arranging peace negotiations between the terrorist group Taliban and the Afghan government, Russia planned to undermine US influence in Central Asia.
This was written by the correspondent of the Swiss newspaper Le Temps in Moscow Emmanuel Grinshpan, reports Foreign press.
After winning a major position in the Syrian conflict, Russia is trying to take a new position in Afghanistan. A meeting organized on Friday in Moscow under the auspices of the Russian Foreign Ministry brought together for the first time representatives of the Taliban movement (which Moscow classifies as a terrorist organization) and the High Peace Council, an authority associated with the Afghan government. In order to better justify its “Russian World Project,” Moscow invited all its neighbors: 11 countries, including China, Pakistan and Iran, the article says.
Some delegates, such as Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, made comments: "We will not talk to the government until the US leaves Afghanistan." He said that "the Taliban do not receive weapons from the Russians," in response to a charge repeatedly made by Washington. Americans are “furious about this Russian initiative,” admitted one unnamed Western diplomat.
This meeting has crowned many years of inconspicuous and delicate negotiations between Moscow and the Taliban. The first attempt to organize such a meeting failed two months ago under pressure from the Afghan government.
However, Kabul, weakened in recent weeks by various military attacks by guerrilla groups, reconciled. In addition to diplomatic success, Russia seeks to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan for security purposes. As Sergei Lavrov recalled, without naming the Islamic State, “some want to make their terrorist springboard in Central Asia in Afghanistan,” the author of the article reports.
The meeting ended on Friday afternoon without a joint statement; it would be surprising if the opposite happened, the journalist notes. According to Dmitry Verkhoturov, an expert at the Center for the Study of Modern Afghanistan, the meeting marks “a new stage in Afghan politics. Kabul needs to push the Taliban to follow the example of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who signed a peace agreement with the government [in 2016]. It's about a long process of rebuilding trust."
Before signing a peace agreement, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar led the Islamic Party of Afghanistan, considered a terrorist organization until 2016, for several decades, the article says.
“If they give guarantees and sign a peace agreement, the Taliban will have the right to claim this, but the decision can only be made at the international level,” the expert continues.
In the meantime, the Russians and the Taliban have agreed on one thing: together, they are able to reduce the importance of the United States in the region, concludes Gryshpan.
