Russia prevented NASA from launching a spacecraft on the ISS: what happened

NASA has postponed the launch of the Starliner spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS), which was scheduled for July 30. This happened due to the incident with the Russian module, writes RBC.

The Russian module "Science" docked to the ISS on July 29. After that, an abnormal start of the engines occurred on it, because of which the station turned 45 degrees.

The postponement of the launch will give the ISS team time to check the operation of the arrived Russian module and ensure that the station is ready for the arrival of the Starliner, NASA explained.

The Russian module "Science" docked to the ISS on the afternoon of July 29. Nauka replaced the Pirs module, which had undocked from the station three days earlier. The new Russian module was docked to the ISS for the first time since 2010, when the small research module Rassvet was docked to the station.

The launch of the module was repeatedly postponed. It was originally planned for 2017, but due to problems with the fuel system, the module was sent to the manufacturer for revision, writes with the BBC.

Later, NASA reported that an abnormal start of the engines occurred on the module. According to the ministry, the ISS turned 45 degrees due to an abnormal start of the engines of the Nauka module. To compensate for the impulse, the engines of the Zvezda module and the Progress cargo ship had to be used. The agency clarified that the crew has begun restoration work, nothing threatens him.

Roscosmos said that work is now underway with the fuel residues in the module.

“The process of transferring the Nauka module from the flight mode to the“ docked with the ISS ”mode is underway,” they said.

Dmitry Rogozin, General Director of Roscosmos, explained that the flight of the Nauka module was non-standard, and this became a cause for excitement for several days.

“I had to worry for the first three days, it was not easy to launch, there was a loss of telemetry,” the head said. According to him, "Roskosmos" will analyze the problems, and during the next launches it is necessary to "stop" such malfunctions.

The incident with the "Science" module is not the first time when the engines of the spacecraft docked with the ISS suddenly started working, but this rarely happens, said the head of the US ISS program Joel Montalbano.

“It definitely doesn't happen regularly. I would say this is maybe the third or fourth time in the more than 20-year history of the ISS,” he said.

The Science module is intended for conducting experiments in the field of biology and physics.
