Russia may lose one of its US consulate generals

The American authorities may require Russia to close one of the Russian consulates in the United States. So, according to the diplomatic sources of the publication “Merchant”, May be Washington’s response to the sanctions imposed by Moscow, implying a sharp reduction in the staff of the US Embassy in Russia and the arrest of a number of real estate facilities. At the moment, Russia has four consulates in the United States, and the United States in Russia has three. The decision may be announced by September 1.

The question of the working conditions of the diplomatic missions of Russia and the United States was discussed at the meeting held recently in Manila by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Following the talks, the head of the US foreign policy department told reporters that Washington was considering Moscow’s response to the sanctions it imposed and would give it before September 1.

Now the United States has three general consulates in Russia - in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok. And Russia has four consulates in the USA - in New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Houston. Some time ago, the parties negotiated the opening of the fourth American consulate in Russia, but in the end the United States refused this idea. It is not known which of the Russian general consulates could be hit. It is also not yet clear how this step will affect the procedure for obtaining Russian visas.

It should be noted that, despite the “ambassadorial wars,” both Moscow and Washington are talking about readiness for cooperation in areas of common interest, such as Syria, Ukraine, and strategic stability. Following the talks with Rex Tillerson, Sergey Lavrov said that “the number of complex topics on the bilateral agenda, unfortunately, is not getting less.” “However, we felt the readiness of our American colleagues to continue the dialogue. I believe that there is simply no alternative to this, ”he said. The US Secretary of State also spoke in a similar vein: “We must find places on which we can work together. We will have to continue to look for ways to resolve those issues on which we have differences. ”

Recall, July 28 Russian authorities demanded from the United States to reduce the number of employees of US diplomatic missions in Russia to 455 people. So many people work in the diplomatic missions of Russia in the United States, while the staff of American structures in Russia includes about 1200 people. In addition, since 1 in August, the US embassy has suspended the use of two real estate properties in Moscow - villas in Serebryany Bor and a warehouse on Dorozhnaya Street.
