Danchenko was charged with perjury to the FBI and now faces up to five years in prison on each of the five counts.

Russian analyst became a key source of information used by former British intelligence operative Christopher Steele in a dossier claiming Trump was compromised by ties to Russia ahead of the 2016 elections.

A dossier, many of whose claims have never been confirmed, became one of the most controversial parts of the 2016 FBI investigation into Trump and Russia, known as the Hurricane of the Crossfire, which led to investigation by Special Adviser Robert Mueller.

Among the statements presented by Danchenko was the fact that the Russians had Trump's tape with women. Trump denies that such an episode ever took place.

The FBI used Steele's dossier to obtain a foreign warrant for spying on former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.

Danchenko is accused of providing information that became part of an FBI warrant to spy on Page.

In one case, prosecutors blame Danchenko for hiding that a US-based public relations officer was his source and helped him maintain Steele's work.

The prosecutor's office suggests, among other things, that Danchenko, according to investigators, made an anonymous telephone call to the leader of the Russian-American Chamber of Commerce.

The call to the president of the chamber of commerce was the reason why the Steele file was marked as a "well-designed conspiracy of cooperation" between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Danchenko was released by a federal court judge on $ 100 bail.

In September, Durham issued a new set of subpoenas, including to a law firm closely associated with Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign, suggesting that he may be trying to build a broader criminal case.

But so far, Durham's two-year investigation of the FBI case against Russia has not led to the consequences that the Republicans hoped for.

The latest subpoenas came after Durham accused Clinton's campaign attorney Michael Sussmann of lying to the FBI at a September 2016 meeting.

Durham was appointed special adviser to former Attorney General William Barr in October 2020, but kept it under wraps so as not to interfere in the 2020 election.
